50K Sign Petition to Rename Street Outside Trump Tower After Obama

A petition to rename the stretch of Fifth Avenue where Trump Tower is located after former President Barack Obama has reached 50,000 signatures, according to Newsweek.

The petition requests that the section of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Street, which is just outside Trump Tower, be renamed to “President Barack H. Obama,” and began in October of last year. If successful, Trump Tower’s address would become “725 Barack H. Obama Avenue, New York, NY 10022.”

“The City of Los Angeles recently honored Obama by renaming a stretch of the 134 Freeway near Downtown L.A. in his honor,” reads the background section on the petition’s Moveon.org page.

“We request the New York City Mayor and City Council do the same by renaming a block of Fifth Avenue after the former president whose many accomplishments include: saving our nation from the Great Recession; serving two completely scandal-free terms in office; and taking out Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind September 11th, which killed over 3,000 New Yorkers.”

“I honestly started it as a joke,” Elizabeth Rowin, who started the petition, told Newsweek. “I saw a comedian joke about how it would make Trump so mad if it was named after former President Obama and thought why not.”

Rowin said she contacted the New York City Council and was told by several members that they would look into it.
