Bombshell Connection Between High-Ranking Democrat Donors And The College Bribery Scandal

The general thrust of the mainstream coverage of this week’s charges against a bunch of rich elites for allegedly bribing Ivy League schools to admit their kids has been a by-the-numbers story of the wealthy exploiting their wealth to secure unearned privileges for their families at the expense of poorer students.

While that’s certainly true, it also fits perfectly with standard Democrat class rhetoric, such that Elizabeth Warren can talk tough about having “zero sympathy” for the accused (because using fake race claims rather than money to advance yourself is apparently better). But surprise surprise, it turns out there is indeed a political angle.

The Washington Free Beacon looked at the list of the accused, and found several who use their wealth to fund leftists just like Warren:

[Felicity] Huffman, when not acting, is a generous donor to Democratic candidates. Huffman has donated thousands of dollars since 2016 to Sen. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.), according to the Federal Election Commission’s site. Prior to that, she donated frequently to President Barack Obama’s election efforts […]

[Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP co-chair Gordon] Caplan gave the maximum allowable donation to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. He donated an additional $25,000 to the Hillary Victory Fund and $22,300 to the Democratic National Committee in 2016, months before Clinton lost to Donald Trump. Caplan began giving to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.) in 2005.

During the 2018 midterms, Caplan shelled out thousands of dollars to support Democratic candidates in Connecticut, Indiana, Florida, Arizona, and Nevada. His lavish political spending used to be bipartisan. In 2011 and 2012, he gave tens of thousands of dollars to both Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s presidential campaigns […]

During the 2016 election cycle, [Crown Realty and Development owner Robert] Flaxman donated to Clinton’s campaign and gave thousands of dollars to the Democratic Party in states including Colorado, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. He also donated to several Republicans, albeit on a far less frequent basis. Several years earlier, in the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns, he also spent upwards of $125,000 supporting Republicans.

Other Democrat donors named include winemaker Agustin Huneeus and Trendera founder and president Jane Buckingham. While several of these candidates donated to both parties, as is common, the only one who “gave consistently” to Republicans, according to the Free Beacon, is actress Lori Loughlin’s husband Mossimo Giannulli.

This should surprise nobody. For all their talk of “privilege,” nobody has a bigger sense of entitlement than leftists. Resenting what you don’t have and coveting what someone else does is baked into their every economic policy.

Every major Democrat who took money from these people should be asked to address the scandal, pressed on whether they’ll keep the contributions of their beleaguered backers, and quizzed on whether this sort of thing is the real reason they support racial quotas in academia and ever-growing education spending: to compensate for their own base’s gaming of the system.
