Buzzfeed: Local Police Responded to Nearly Twice the Number of Calls Publicly Disclosed

Broward County Sheriff’s officials responded to 45 calls involving Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz or his family, nearly twice the number the department publicly disclosed late Saturday, according to dispatch records obtained by BuzzFeed News.

“Since 2008, BSO responded to 23 incidents where previous contact was made with the killer or his family,” BSO said in a statement it tweeted out. “STOP REPORTING 39; IT’S SIMPLY NOT TRUE. It was determined after a preliminary review there were no arrestable offenses.”

Cruz, who confessed to opening fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine’s Day, killing 17 and injuring at least 17, suffered from mental health issues and underwent treatment for them but stopped a year ago.

BuzzFeed previously reported that local police made 36 trips to Cruz’ house over a six-year period for violent or erratic behavior, citing dozens of police reports.

Most of the calls BuzzFeed uncovered on Sunday involve domestic disturbance issues involving Cruz, his brother Zachary and their adoptive mother, Lynda, and were made between Nov. 12, 2011 and Nov. 30, 2016.
