CNN: Epstein’s Cell Was Not Regularly Monitored

The prison cell of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein was not regularly monitored the night he committed suicide, according to CNN.

Additionally, the two guards monitoring the Special Housing Unit at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan were both working overtime.

Epstein was being held in SHU when he hanged himself at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday. He was facing up to 45 years in prison on federal sex trafficking charges.

The details surrounding Epstein’s death are being investigated by the FBI and the Department of Justice’s Inspector General as suicide at the jail is rare – a review of published stories conducted by the New York Post found only one such death in the past 21 years – and Epstein is a high-profile inmate who had previously been held on suicide watch.

The billionaire was found unconscious in his jail cell with marks on his neck in late July, and prison officials were investigating the incident as a possible suicide attempt.

He was placed on suicide watch but was taken off after about a week, according to some news reports. Prisoners in the SHU are supposed to be checked on every 30 minutes.
