Outspoken U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell has received death threats over the last few months, CNN reports.
Grenell, who since his appointment in May 2018 has antagonized Berlin’s political establishment over issues ranging from Germany’s commercial ties with Iran to its military spending, received a letter in January telling him to leave the country.
The note was signed by the “Society for the New Truth” and was one of several threats sent to the embassy, according to a source and two State Department officials who spoke with CNN. One envelope contained an unidentified white powder.
Grenell in early January told Politico he would not change his approach despite criticism – some of his critics refer to him as “the little Trump.”
“I open up every conversation by saying I speak very frankly to friends, and the Germans are our friends,” he told the news outlet then. “There’s an overwhelming appreciation of being able to speak honestly and openly. Sometimes, there will also be people who respond very respectfully, ‘I like your frankness, so let me also be frank in my reaction,’ and then they push back on U.S. policy. I enjoy this dialogue.”
Over the past few days, Grenell condemned the presence of a convicted Palestinian terrorist who entered Germany to deliver a talk about “Palestinian women in the liberation struggle.”
