CNN’s Chris Cuomo Moves to Prime Time Slot

Chris Cuomo, the longtime co-anchor of CNN’s “New Day,” is taking over the second hour of Anderson Cooper’s nightly show on the same network.

Beginning this spring, “Cuomo Prime Time” will air weeknights at 9 p.m. ET following “Anderson Cooper 360.”

“The show will feature Cuomo’s signature in-depth one-on-one interviews that test politicians and newsmakers on their positions, as well as analyses of news of the day and the latest breaking news,” a CNN spokesperson said.

That will pit Cuomo — the brother of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and son of former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo — directly against MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Fox News’s Sean Hannity.

John Berman, currently the co-anchor of “CNN Newsroom” with Poppy Harlow, will replace Cuomo on “New Day,” co-anchoring with Alisyn Camerota.

According to The New York Times, which broke the story of the promotion, the move comes as CNN struggles in the prime time cable-news ratings race, falling to third-place behind Fox News and MSNBC.

The Times says “viewers are increasingly drawn to partisan commentary,” which the outspoken Cuomo has gained prominence with receiving “some right-wing blowback” for his coverage of the Trump administration.

To accommodate the new schedule, Cooper’s nightly show will be reduced to one hour.

A spokesman for former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, who has mixed it up on the air with Cuomo, said “The Mooch” was happy with the news of the promotion.

“They always have good, lively interactions and have great respect for each other,” the rep told The Hollywood Reporter.
