Dem Flip on Impeachment Is Right-Wing Media Invention

MSNBC host Chris Jansing on Tuesday said Rep. Brenda Lawrence’s (D., Mich.) apparent flip on impeachment was a right-wing media creation, just hours after a fellow MSNBC host acknowledged the change of view.

“I know you know what folks on the right are saying right now: They say you flipped,” Jansing said to Lawrence. “I’m going to show you, there are headlines: One says ‘Swing state Dem flips on impeachment.’ ‘House Democrat backs down from impeachment.’ There we see them in the Daily Caller and Newsmax.”

Earlier in the day on MSNBC, fellow host Craig Melvin portrayed Lawrence’s suggestion that the impeachment process should end in censure as a change of heart.

“Here we have a Democrat, from a solidly blue district, by the way, saying that she does not see the value in taking the president out of office,” Melvin said. “In fact, it sounds to me perhaps she would be more in favor of a censure than she would be of impeachment.”

Jansing also asked Lawrence if she was bothered that right-wing media was presenting her comments as a flip on impeachment.

“It’s very disappointing because it’s a slap to where I stand. I have not flipped,” Lawrence responded.

Lawrence on Tuesday scrambled to walk back comments she made during a radio interview over the weekend where she appeared to endorse censuring President Donald Trump rather than removing him from office.

“I will tell you, sitting here knowing how divided this country is, I don’t see the value of taking him out of office,” the Michigan representative said on No BS News Hour.

“I want him censured,” she added. “I want it on the record that the House of Representatives did their job and they told this president and any president coming behind him that this is unacceptable behavior and under our Constitution we will not allow it.”
