Former President George H.W. Bush shaved his head in 2013 along with his Secret Service detail in solidarity with an agent’s 2-year-old son who was diagnosed with leukemia.

When George H.W. Bush’s Secret Service detail planned to shave their heads in support of an agent’s young son who had been diagnosed with leukemia, the 41st president refused to sit out.

Ahead of Bush’s funeral service, the Secret Service shared photos of a grinning and bald-headed Bush holding the agent’s 2-year-old son in 2013, calling it “classic 41 manner.”

Bush lost his 3-year-old daughter Robin Bush to leukemia in 1953. After her death, he wrote a letter to his wife Barbara Bush, saying, “She is still with us.”

“We need her and yet we have her. We can’t touch her and yet we can feel her. We hope she’ll stay in our house for a long, long time,” Bush wrote to his wife, who died earlier this year.

Bush’s Twitter account shared an updated photo of the former president and the “courageous young man (with hair!)” years later — in November 2016. Patrick “is feeling and doing much better these days,” the post read.

Bush, who served in the White House from 1989 to 1993, died on Nov. 30 at the age of 94. After lying in state at the Capitol rotunda this week, Bush will be memorialized at a funeral Wednesday at the Washington National Cathedral.

All of the former living presidents, as well as President Trump, are expected to attend the funeral. Former President George W. Bush, his son, will give a eulogy.

After the funeral, Bush’s body will be flown back to Texas for another service and to be buried at the George Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University. His final resting place will be alongside Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years who died in April, and Robin Bush.
