Sgt. Harold Preston was a 41 year veteran of the Houston Police Department when he was shot and fatally wounded by an illegal immigrant from El Salvador. The Daily Mail reports that “A 51-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting a Houston police officer and wounding another is a migrant from El Salvador who is in the United States illegally, according to federal authorities.”
The other officer with Sgt. Preston was officer Courtney Waller. He is expected to recover from the wounds inflicted when he and Sgt. Preston answered the domestic violence call in Southwest Houston.
The Daily Mail report shows that Preston was shot in the head twice and once in the shoulder and Waller once in the arm.
After the Houston Police Department arrested Elmer Rolando Manzano-Martinez for the shooting of the two officers, ICE placed a detainer with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. This means that Manzano will – as long as the Sheriff’s office complies – not be released on bail for this crime.
Fox News reports that ICE labeled Manzano as a “convicted criminal alien who is unlawfully present in the U.S. Manzano’s 14-year-old son was reportedly the one who warned officers that his father had a gun before giving them access to the apartment.
ICE needs to explain how Manzano got into America, how long has he been here, and why is he was he still in America after previously being convicted of a crime?
This isn’t the case of a man flying under the radar for years and then killing a police officer and injuring another. This man was previously convicted of a crime and should have been deported then.
The officers did return fire as Manzano was shot in the abdomen but is expected to make a full recovery, unlike Sgt. Preston, who died from his wounds at the hospital.
Sgt. Preston was only weeks away from retirement when illegal immigrant Elmer Manzano took his life.
