A former Dallas police officer who shot and killed a man she mistakenly thought had entered her apartment is heading to prison with tears, hugs, and words of hope from the victim’s brother and the trial judge.

Amber Guyger on Wednesday was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting her neighbor, Botham Jean, 26, after she entered his apartment rather than her own. During the sentencing hearing, Jean’s brother, 18-year-old Brandt Jean, said he forgave her and didn’t want her to go to jail, reports ABC News.

“I love you just like anyone else and I’m not going to hope you rot and die,” he told her. “I personally want the best for you. I wasn’t going to say this in front of my family, I don’t even want you to go to jail. I want the best for you because I know that’s exactly what Botham would want for you.”

He then asked Judge Tammy Kemp if he could hug Guyger, and the two, both crying, hugged each other.

Shortly after, the judge spoke to Guyger, hugged her, and gave her a bible, advising her to study it while she’s behind bars.

Jean’s mother, Allison, told reporters that she will accept the sentencing, which will allow Guyger’s release for good behavior after five years but called for more to be done by the city of Dallas.

“His (Botham’s) privacy was violated. She intruded on him and that was not enough. She killed him,” Allison Jean said. “If Amber Guyger was trained not to shoot in the heart, my son would be standing here today.”

Guyger’s claims of self-defense were rejected by a jury on Tuesday, which convicted her of shooting Jean, 26, while he sat in his apartment eating ice cream in September 2018. The Dallas Police Department fired her after the shooting.
