We knew this was coming, but that doesn’t make it any less outrageous.

Tonight, the United States Senate voted on legislation to ban abortions at 20 weeks of pregnancy, the point at which preborn babies are capable of feeling pain.

The final vote was a narrow majority in favor, with two Republicans defecting to vote no and three Democrats defecting to vote yes:

If the Democrat Party was not utterly in bed with the death cult that is the abortion industry, a bill that gave women a full five months in which to get an abortion, but merely drew a line afterward to spare children unimaginable suffering, would be the very definition of a moderate compromise. Alas, the Democrats sold their souls long ago. This is not news.

It’s worse that a pair of Republicans, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, were able to side with the child execution lobby because the GOP refuses to enforce the core principles of its own party platform.

Nevertheless, neither of these factors stopped the bill from winning the support of a majority of the Senate — the Constitution’s threshold for passage. Yet it died anyway, because it didn’t get sixty votes, a supermajority which our Founding Fathers consciously decided
