Surgeon General to Newsmax TV: China’s Aggressive Actions Helped Stem Virus

Surgeon General Jerome Adams says China’s aggressive actions to stem the spread of coronavirus are working, though the administration is still troubled about the lack of information from Beijing when the outbreak started.

“It’s definitely very troubling that we couldn’t get information from the start because we and the rest of the world could have better prepared and helped them contain it within China,” Adams told Sean Spicer during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co.”

“We’re more confident now because we’re seeing where the cases are coming from. We see that the majority of the cases in the U.S. by far are traced back to Europe. Italy and Europe have become the new China. And it seems like China’s aggressive mitigation actions are working.”

Adams sought to dispel some myths about the virus, which has infected more than 270,000 people globally and killed more than 11,000.

He told Spicer that people can go outside and exercise, that they shouldn’t necessarily stop taking medications like ibuprofen and aspirin, and that many should simply take sensible precautions, such as social distancing.

“We want you to get fresh air,” he said. “Just make sure you’re staying 6 feet away from the nearest person. Masks prevent you from spreading the disease to anyone else.”
