Thug Hits Cop in the Head With a Pistol; Quickly Learns it Was a Bad Idea

A Detroit thug made a very dumb decision and got some instant karma.

Detroit police Captain Darin Szilagy said that officers were on patrol on Thursday when they noticed a man engaging in suspicious activity, The Detroit News reports.

One of the officers confronted the man in his driveway to find out what was going on when the man attacked the officer and a struggle ensued.

That is when the man pulled a gun on the officer and hit him with it.

The officer then pulled his own gun and shot the man multiple times, wounding him.

The man “produced a handgun and ultimately was able to swing it and strike our officer in the head,” Szilagy said “Our officer, fearing for his life and his safety, produced his department weapon and returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.”

Backup officers took the suspect into custody and transported him to a hospital for treatment. The man, who has not been named, was listed in stable condition late Thursday.

The officer also was hospitalized in stable condition with a head wound, Szilagy said. “We’re very thankful that the officer is going to recover.”

Meanwhile, investigators recovered a handgun from the scene and were working to determine what the man was doing before the incident, Szilagy said.

The incident happened eight days after Officer Glenn Doss was shot while responding to a domestic violence call on the city’s east side. He died four days later; his funeral is scheduled for Friday.

Such episodes underscore how “it’s a very dangerous job we’re doing for this community,” Szilagy said.

It is unknown if body camera footage exists of the altercation, MLive reported.

Police have not revealed if there is body-camera or dashcam video of the encounter. Detroit police set a goal of having all officers and vehicles equipped as part of the department’s new $5.2 million camera program by the end of 2017.

The Detroit police officers involved has recently attended the visitation for Detroit Police Officer Glen Doss Jr., who died Jan. 28 of a gunshot wound to the head after responding to a domestic dispute on Jan. 24. Doss’ funeral is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Friday.

“No officer has to be hurt out here,” Szilagy said. “They have the right to go home safe, and we demand that our officers protect themselves, defend themselves …

The officer and suspect are in stable condition and neither has been named.
