The Trump administration has approved a sale of 210 anti-tank missiles to Ukraine, the State Department announced Thursday.
The missiles will be a part of Ukraine’s defenses against Russia. Russian-backed rebels took over the Crimean Peninsula which belonged to Ukraine and annexed it in 2014. The fighting has continued in the eastern part of Ukraine.
The Javelin missiles and 37 command launch units are being sold for $47 million and will come from current U.S. Army stockpiles, the Associated Press reports.
Congress has 30 days to stop the deal, but is not expected to as providing lethal aid to Ukraine has been supported by both Republicans and Democrats.
Heavy weaponry, such as tanks, have been a critical part of Russian advancement in Ukrainian territory. The U.S. has sanctions imposed against Russian entities and individuals due to the attack on Ukraine.
