US, China Appear Close to a Deal, Kellyanne Conway Says

President Donald Trump and China President Xi Jinping appear closer to a trade deal, according to presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway.

“The president wants a deal, and he wants it to be fair to American workers and American interests,” Conway told Fox News’ “Fox & Friends.” “He forged a mutually respectable, respectful, I should say, a relationship with President Xi.”

Further, the team lead by Ambassador Robert Lighthizer, has been “working overtime to get the deal done,” Conway said.

Trump has been saying the “exact same” thing he has been saying overall, Conway said.

“Why do we have a $500 billion trade deficit with China?” Conway said. “Why are our folks the ones getting screwed? He wants a deal and he wants to be fair with this country. If he wants a trade deal, we’ll meet again soon.”

Trump is planning to meet at the end of February with North Korea’s Chairman Kim Jong Un in Vietnam, and China has pushed for the denuclearization of North Korea, Conway added.

Her comments come as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo travels to Central Europe amid fears concerning the growing influence of China and Russia in the region, according to other administration officials.

Pompeo, who left for the trip Sunday, is expected to point out Central Europe’s reliance on Russia’s energy, as well as Chinese telecom firm Huawei, according to officials. Huawei’s expansion, particularly in NATO member states, is a concern because of the threats to information security systems.
