Medical facilities in Utah might soon have to start giving preference to younger patients over older ones in some cases as the rate of hospitalizations from the coronavirus sharply increase in the state, according to a plan given to Gov. Gary Herbert, The Hill reported over the weekend.

Hospital administrators said it might be necessary to approve such a proposal in order to take dramatic measures to cut back on admissions to intensive care units if hospitals become overwhelmed, which is a real possibility, according to the Salt Lake City Tribune.

The plan stipulates that those patients who are showing improvement will be asked to consider moving from the intensive care unit to a regular hospital bed.

The governor’s office confirmed that the state’s intensive care units are approaching capacity, but did not say if Herbert would approve the hospital administrators’ proposal.

Utah’s daily rate of new coronavirus cases has doubled from its worst point of the pandemic’s first wave earlier in the year.
