A veterans advocacy group is targeting Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., for what it claims is her failure to protect Wisconsin’s veterans from being overprescribed opioids.

Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) released a 30-second ad that references the overdose death of a Marine veteran.

“Tammy Baldwin was the only senator with an inspector general report on the scandal,” the narrator said in the ad. “She could have exposed the problems and helped Wisconsin veterans. Instead, Baldwin sat on the report for months, keeping it secret while veterans became addicted and families suffered.

“Our veterans deserve better. Tell Tammy Baldwin to fight for our veterans.”

Baldwin served in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1993 to 1999 and in the U.S. House from 1999 to 2013, at which point she began serving in the Senate. She is running for re-election this year.

Among Baldwin’s Republican challengers are State Sen. Leah Vukmir, who serves as assistant majority leader, and Kevin Nicholson, a businessman who serves on the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs.

CVA is spending $1.5 million on its new ad in Wisconsin and asks that citizens call Baldwin’s office and ask her to support the Veterans Community Care and Access Act of 2017.

“Sen. Baldwin put Wisconsin veterans in danger when she failed to act on reports of serious misconduct at the Tomah VA,” CVA Executive Director Dan Caldwell said. “In order to ensure that veterans in Wisconsin aren’t trapped in failing VA hospitals like the one in Tomah, Senator Baldwin needs to step up and support legislation that offers real health choice for veterans at the VA.”
